Background
Environmental problems is not merely technical , but it related to theological (faith) and human behavior. Environmental degradations and disruptions are mostly influenced by the degradation of social morality (al akhlaq al ummah). Muhammadiyah as a da’wah for social and moral movement, has a great potency in the development for improving al akhlaq al ummah ( human ethic and behavior) regarding environmental challenges and movement through the concept of: al amru bil ma’ruf wan nahyu ‘anil munkar ( movement for goodness and prohibit worst behavior). Under this theological view of Muhammadiyah, that man is a part of the universe and al khalifah (representative) of Allah, so that they must be able to represent the role of Allah for the nature such is al-rab (sustaining everything) and rakhmatan (spread grace) in the universe. Once human obligation in the context of devotion to Allah is conservation of natural resources. Protection and preservation of natural environment is equal to preservation of life (hifdzun nafs).
Muhammadiyah is a big and modern moslem civil society in Indonesia. He has more than 35 million members, thousands school and madrasah, hundred universities, hospitals and clinics spread out a long the islands of Indonesia. Muhammadiyah has paved out it commitment to actively participate in the protection and conservation of natural resources and environment as it has been mandated (amanah) by the 45th Muktamar Muhammadiyah in Malang. To follow up and realize this amanah, Muhammadiyah then has been developing The Environment Institution (MLH) for running the institution missions and programs on environment. Some of the selected program is as mentioned in the Table 1 and Table 2.
Proposed Programs
Muhammadiyah has been developing programs and activities which will be implemented during the period of 2010 up to 2015. Some are continuation programs for the prior period which could not be implemented due to some technical reason and will be implemented during the next period. For running the programs, Muhammadiyah will have to collaborate with the stakeholders such as the government, non government (NGO) and other environment communities. Closing Remarks
- Protection and conservation of the natural environment is a moral and ethical imperative (amanah) Allah s.w.t, the Sustainer of all being.
- Environmental problems can not be solved through knowledge and technology alone. Only faith and moral conviction can motivate people to forego the short range profits of this life, and to make personal sacrifices .
- Education of environment (knowledge, cognition and affection) to moslem community should continually be done. Its should also be backed with legislation and effective enforcement of injunction and prohibition by the government.
- Environmental problems can only be solved through planned and organized actions.
